5 Things You Need to Know About Pugs
|Did you know that Pugs do This ?
1. This is Gizmo. An 11 year old super Pug . Looking rather grey around the muzzle and paws but still going strong. He is the leader of the pack and the alpha male.
Gizmo likes to sleep whenever he gets the chance and we reckon he is in the land of nod for at least 14 hours per day !
2. Eat. Like all Pugs Gizmo loves his food. Perhaps too much! He has been known to growl if other Pugs approach his bowl whilst he is eating but never growls at humans. It is important to give Pugs the right food. Some people recommend giving them only dry food. If you do this please mix some water in with it. We prefer a more balanced diet with wet and dry food . Please check portions and food types with your vet.
Did you know that some foods are extremely dangerous for Pugs ( and all other Dogs !) such as Grapes and Raisins. Here is a list of the more common dangerous foods . Never feed your dog with them!!
Pugs love to play , so ensure they have sufficient toys to play with . Remeber that Puppies go through a teething stage so need toys they can chew.
3. Exercise & Play
Whilst pugs are no exactly huskies they do need some regular exercise and would benefit from two x 20 minute walks per day. They love going to the park or just walking around the streets. Be careful when you take them out to keep them on the lead and be aware of other dogs – who may be aggressive. It is a good idea to introduce your pug to other dogs via a puppy training class where he can socialize and interact with other puppies in a secure situation.
Pugs are very susceptible to extremes of cold and heat so pay attention to this and if you suspect they are suffering take them home immediately. Also do not leave them alone in a car . This can be fatal!
4. Going to the Loo ( toilet )
Almost a taboo subject amongst pet owners but just like us your Pug has to Pee and Poo. Young puppies do their business everywhere and mom and dad wash them by licking and removing any excrement from the baby pugs bodies. However as the puppies grow and slowly move onto solid food this job becomes too much for the pug parents and you have to step in !
Toilet training puppies is very important and we have found that most pugs respond to this and will learn to do their business in a designated area or outside. Please remember to carry litter bags with you at all times .
5. Last but not least: Mating – Another taboo topic. Pugs mature very quickly and both males and females start to become active from around 6 months. Age also seems no barrier to sexual activity. Old Gizmo is still trying ! In our pack of 5 pugs we have seen it all .. . It is certainly true that Pugs prefer to make love not war.
However please do not rоmаntісіzе your dоg’ѕ urge to mаkе рuрріеѕ — they have a natural dеѕіrе to perpetuate thе ѕресіеѕ ie. not fall in love with another dog! Yоur little gіrl wоn’t fееl unfulfilled if she doesn’t hаvе bаbіеѕ, аnd уоur mаlе won’t feel like less macho bу nоt fаthеrіng рuрріеѕ. Unless уоu’rе аn еxреrіеnсеd breeder and have lоvіng hоmеѕ lined uр fоr аll futurе рuрріеѕ; get уоur pug ѕрауеd оr nеutеrеd before thеу become ѕеxuаllу mature. Thіѕ nоt оnlу рrеvеntѕ lots оf рuрріеѕ, but саn аlѕо рrеvеnt hеаlth іѕѕuеѕ ѕuсh аѕ mammary оr tеѕtісulаr саnсеrѕ.
Be under no illusion having puppies is a huge amount of work and cost.
